Getting all excited over…yarn

Today is the start of Sari’s Project Going Out for September, a good opportunity to take a walk and make a short visit to our local yarn store. I wanted to check out the available assortment and was suprised what a sweet little shop I’ve got here right in the small town where I live. While in most of the big department stores in Munich (and even yarn shops in the city) all you can buy are yarns by Schachenmayr and – if you’re lucky – Lana Grossa, my local store sells yarns by all kind of „exotic“ brands (in the sense that from my experience you have to go hunting for them).

So I treated myself to one skein of Zitron Nimbus (color 20): 100% organic new wool (Merino). The real color is so much more beautiful than any picture could show and it’s so soft to the hands while you’re knitting.

I bought it to realize a pair of pulse warmers from the Vampire Knits book I got recently. This will be my first project marked as intermediate. I’m tired of making scarfs, scarfs and even more scarfs :D So, pluse warmers it is, with some increasing and cables. I’m super excited and even made a gauge (I’m always to lazy for that, but it showed I need to use smaller needles than the ones in the pattern).

Are you in the mood to follow me on my adventures into knitting land?

Something beautiful is on the way

The moment I decided my ripple blanket would be finished soon I was eager to try out new patterns. For the next blanket of course. Once you’ve started to crochet blankets I don’t think there’s a way back.

Via ravelry I stumbled upon the African Flower pattern. Once you’ve got the hang of it (and aren’t too tired, or you’ll end up with seven flower petals, like I did xD) those are easy to make and can be joined on the go.

In my opinion the chosen colors make a crucial difference wether the african flowers look good or not. To be honest I’m not the best when it comes to pretty color combos. It’s not that I’d combine orange with brown and spinach green (and there might be a charm in that one, too…if you lived in the 70s…and are a hospital wall or something similar), but my creations always lack that certain something. Fortunately there are others like Lucy of Attic24 or in this case MiA Inspiration who really know what they do.

I love the oriental touch of those different shades of blues and pinks together.

New crafting books

Sometimes I’m lucky and get some new crafting books at work :3 This time I was very lucky.

The new additions are:

Knitting Vintage
Love…Knitting

Vampire Knits:
Projects to Keep You Knitting from Twilight to Dawn
Wee Wonderfuls: 24 Dolls to Sew and Love

Especially Wee Wonderfuls and Vampire Knits are a treat for the eyes. I like the latter although most of the patterns are inspired by the Twilight series :!: Nevertheless vampires and shapeshifters are kind of cool and it’s funny to read a girl should wear selfmade pulse warmers whenever she plans to meet her new vampire boyfriend xD

Finished Project: Round Coasters

Every once in a while I even finish a craft project ;) As I’ve worked on a ripple blanket for several years now, I felt like doing something fun and quick. So I browsed through my books and ended up crocheting some pink and white coasters following a pattern from this book. Not that anyone who’s able to crochet in rounds needs a pattern for something this easy, but it’s always good to have some inspirational books at hand.

I used a 100% cotton yarn (white and darker pink is Lyric by puppets, the light pink the rest of my Sugar’n Cream by lily) and a 5mm hook.

They are big enough for either cup or teapot.

Day 7 in Japan: Manga Wonderland

Hooray, for the first time I was able to sleep witouht a disruption! Accordingly refreshed I started into this Saturday with…suprise, suprise…riding my bike to Seiyu Supermarkt. I felt like eating toast with cheese, ham & eggs and drinking hot chocolate for breakfast. Everything was horrible expensive, but that’s just how it is over here.

At half past one p.m. I met with Sarah and Anna to check some of the Second-Hand-Bookshops and we rode our bikes south, a direction we had not been to so far. OH MY GOD, it’s been simply gorgeous! Second-Hand-Books in Japan means manga, manga, manga. There were tons of them, all in very good shape and so cheap. Most of them cost only 105 Yen, at Meiroku there are even plenty of completed series you can buy in a bunch (like CLAMP manga or Fruits Basket *drool*). Here on the picture you can see „Book off“ which seems to be a chain all over Japan. There I also bought a Hello Kitty Amigurumi book. Kawaii!

20091010_01

There were quite a few manga by Chiho Saito, my favourite manga artist (she drew „Revolutionary Girl Utena“), and…now grab a chair or you will faint…some of them were only 10 Yen. 10!!!!! That’s 7 Cent in Germany!!!!!!!!!!!!

20091010_01

The Hello kitty book is for many crocheted Kitties and some knitted goods like scarfs, hats and bags.

20091010_01

Of course I have brought my crochet needles with me to Japan, so all I have to do is buy some yarn in the 100 Yen shop, where else? XD

20091010_01

With all the shopping again I didn’t take too many pictures but I plan to make some bike tours for photography only.

20091010_01

Though it is not allowed I secretly took a picture in the Domy supermarket. Look *lol* Diapers for dogs…damn, that’s crazy! Do we have those in Germany, as well?

20091010_01

Ah, I feel so good. For shopping cute stuff and cheap manga Japan is the best place on earth. In combination with some new friends and three rusty, red bicycles everything seems to turn out well!

After only one week I have relaxed so much an laughed much more than those two years before. My family is with me everyday via MSN and i don’t feel lonely at all (though I do miss b. of course -.-). One certain sign of me feeling happy? There’s a new Jas & Josh-story on my mind…but we will see!

Ein Regenbogen voller Wolle

20090829_01
